Getting Used to Video

So, my second video assignment for this semester was to delve into an issue that we have studied.  The topic that caught my eye the most was the about Digital Divides.  I was interested in the digital technology divide between the old and young in Australia and more importantly wanted to investigate and inform about how this issue is being resolved.  I wanted to clearly show that there was a divide in this instance, but also focus on the positives about how the gap is becoming smaller, or at least that there are things in place to help the gap get smaller.  I mostly wanted to turn the negative into a positive.

The Digital age divide can cause serious problems…

Whilst planning this video I struggled with how to focus my attention.  I started collating images and taking photos of things that I could use.  I also wrote myself a bit of an ‘essay’ on what I wanted to say and how I wanted the video to start and end.  It was a loose script, but it had all the key points I wanted covered in it.  I didn’t want to miss out anything vital.  By this point I had envisaged how I wanted the video to look.  I toyed with the idea of using myself as a cartoon and introducing things that way, but in the end this proved to hard!  Instead I opted to edit recordings of myself to look like I’m speaking on an iPad.  I think this contrasted the fact I was discussing digital technology and its lesser use by older people.  In between this I wanted a slideshow of image overlay that followed what I was narrating.  I also used the juxtaposition of some old versus young images to cement the divide I was discussing.  I used a bell sound to let the audience know that there had been a shift in discussion and titles to accompany this.  I wanted this to be clear.  I looked for music for quite some time.  I wanted something that was almost news-like so it exaggerated the tone of my video.  I found something that came free with my editing software but decided that for the integrity of my video it was better to use something that wasn’t so commonly used.

I found editing time consuming but quickly found ways I liked to do things.  As I was using images rather than lots of video, I tried to edit them in a way that they flowed into each other if my speech was continuing and cut if the subject was changing.

As my subject was based around older people and new technology, it was hard for me to source my own material as you can’t just go around taking pictures of old people!  I also had some images of my mum with my kids using technology which were perfect, but I couldn’t use these as my mum couldn’t sign the consent form!  I relied heavily on free use images or Creative Commons ones, which was not my original intention.  I managed to get a few of my own images in, especially ones using an iPad or my computer screen, and also my videos of myself.  Next time I will use a different concept, so my video isn’t so reliant on others images.

Next time I will also really concrete my ideas more in the planning stage.  I wasted a lot of time putting things together and discarding them once I changed my mind on the direction I was going.

So here it is – my 2nd video assignment.  Enjoy!

Here is the video!
